Black residue in a dishwasher is biofilm — mold and bacteria growing on trapped food in the gasket folds, filter well, sump and drain hose. It requires physical removal from all four locations to stop returning.

What the black stuff actually is

Peel back a dishwasher door gasket that has not been cleaned in a couple of years and you will usually find a dark grey-to-black slime in the fold. It is not burnt food or rubber degradation. It is a mixed colony — commonly Exophiala and Candida species alongside ordinary drain bacteria — living on grease and starch residue in a warm, permanently damp crevice.

These organisms are well adapted to the conditions inside a dishwasher: heat tolerant, detergent tolerant, and perfectly comfortable in the alkaline environment a wash cycle creates. That is why running a hotter cycle does not eliminate them.

Why it keeps coming back after you wipe it

Biofilm is not a coating sitting on the surface; it is a structured community anchored by a polysaccharide matrix. Wiping the visible layer off the gasket removes the top of the colony and leaves the anchor points, plus everything growing in the three places you did not reach: the filter well, the sump beneath the impeller, and the corrugated drain hose.

Within a week or two the visible layer regrows, seeded from those reservoirs. This is the single most common reason people conclude their dishwasher is simply 'old and dirty' — they have been treating a quarter of the problem repeatedly.

Should you be worried about it?

For most healthy households this is a hygiene and odor issue rather than an acute health hazard — dishes come out of a hot wash and rinse cycle, not out of the gasket. If you want to attempt it yourself, the job has to hit all four reservoirs in one session or it will reseed. Set aside an hour.

  • Remove and scrub the filter and the flat screen with a brush and dish soap; wipe out the well they seat in.
  • Pull the lower spray arm and clear every jet with a paperclip, then flush it.
  • Work along the entire gasket with a soft brush, opening the fold as you go, and do the bottom door lip separately.
  • Run a hot cycle with a food-safe descaler, racks empty, then leave the door open overnight to dry.

Where remediation goes beyond a clean

The part most people cannot reach is the sump and the drain hose, and that is precisely where a persistent colony survives. Remediation means lifting out the filter housing, clearing the sump and impeller chamber by hand, and flushing the drain line — then sanitizing rather than merely descaling.
