Short answer

The sanitize cycle adds a high-temperature final rinse (typically 150°F+) that substantially reduces bacteria. It only works in a machine whose filter, sump and gasket are clean — biofilm recontaminates the load as it drains.

What sanitize means on the panel

A sanitize option adds a final rinse held at high temperature — commonly 150°F or above — for long enough to achieve a certified bacterial reduction. Machines carrying the NSF/ANSI 184 certification have been tested to a defined standard rather than just running hotter.

It uses more energy and adds time, which is why it is an option and not the default. Use it deliberately rather than habitually.

When it is worth using

There are specific situations where the extra heat earns its cost, and a lot of daily loads where it does not.

  • Baby bottles, pump parts and feeding equipment (where the manufacturer permits dishwasher use).
  • Cutting boards and utensils used for raw meat, poultry or fish.
  • Any load run while a household member has a gastrointestinal illness.
  • Dishes returning from storage, a vacation property or a garage.
  • Items used by an immunocompromised household member.

Why machine cleanliness comes first

Here is the part that gets missed: the sanitizing rinse water drains through the same sump, filter and drain path as everything else. If that path is lined with biofilm, the final rinse water picks up organisms on the way through and the load's last contact is with contaminated water.

A sanitize cycle in a neglected machine is largely theater. Clean filter, clean sump, clean gasket, then sanitize — in that order. This is the strongest hygiene argument for annual professional deep cleaning in households with infants or vulnerable members.

Plastics, heat and the top rack

Baby bottles and pump parts almost always belong on the top rack, away from the heating element, and inside a closed basket so small valves and rings do not fall through. Check each item for a dishwasher-safe mark and a top-rack designation.

High-heat cycles degrade some plastics over time, causing clouding and micro-cracking that then harbors residue. Rotate bottles out when they cloud rather than keeping them in service indefinitely.

Drying is part of hygiene

Bacteria need moisture. Items that come out damp and go straight into a closed cupboard are worse off than items that air-dry fully. Use rinse aid to promote sheeting, and open the door at the end of the cycle to let residual heat evaporate the remaining moisture.

The same applies to the machine itself: a tub left to dry between cycles is a tub where biofilm cannot re-establish.
