Stainless Steel vs Plastic Tubs: What Changes for Cleaning

Tub material changes how a machine dries, how it stains, and which products you must not put in it.

Short answer

Stainless tubs resist odor and staining, dry better via condensation, and must never see bleach. Plastic tubs stain from tomato and turmeric, hold odor more readily, and tolerate mild bleach-based cleaners but need heated drying.

How to tell which you have

Open the door and look at the tub walls and floor. Stainless is grey metal and cold to the touch; plastic tubs are usually dark grey, tan or black polypropylene with a slightly textured feel. Some machines are hybrid — stainless walls with a plastic floor — which is worth noting because it limits your product choices to the plastic rules.

Stainless steel: odor-resistant, bleach-intolerant

Stainless is non-porous, so it does not absorb odor compounds and does not stain from tomato sauce or curry. It also conducts heat well, which is how condensation drying works: the tub walls cool faster than the dishes, moisture condenses on the metal and drains away, with no heating element scorching your plastics.

The critical rule is no chlorine bleach, ever. Chloride ions attack the passive layer on stainless and cause pitting corrosion that does not heal. Descalers based on citric acid are fine; bleach-based cleaners are not.

Plastic: forgiving on chemicals, prone to stains

Plastic tubs stain. Tomato-based sauces, turmeric and strongly colored foods leave orange and yellow discoloration that is cosmetic and largely permanent. They are also more porous at a microscopic level, so odor establishes more readily and needs more diligent filter and gasket maintenance.

In exchange, they tolerate a mild bleach-based cleaner if one is genuinely needed, and they are cheaper to manufacture and quieter than thin stainless. They rely on a heating element for drying, which is why plastics on the bottom rack warp in these machines.

Servicing implications

On stainless machines we use citric-acid descalers and non-abrasive pads only; a steel-wool pad leaves embedded iron particles that then rust and look like the tub itself is corroding. On plastic machines we focus more heavily on gasket and sump biofilm, because odor recurs faster.

Neither material changes the fundamental maintenance stack: filter monthly, descale on a hardness-matched interval, deep clean annually.
