Hard Water and Your Dishwasher: Limescale Explained

A household at 12 grains per gallon deposits about a pound of mineral inside its dishwasher every year. Here is where it lands and what it costs.

Short answer

Water above 7 grains per gallon deposits calcium and magnesium scale on the heating element, spray arms and pump housing. Above 10 gpg, descale every six to eight weeks instead of quarterly.

What hardness actually is

Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from limestone and dolomite aquifers. In the US it is measured in grains per gallon: under 3 gpg is soft, 3 to 7 is moderately soft, 7 to 10 is hard, and above 10 is very hard. Cities drawing from limestone groundwater — much of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Indiana and central Texas — routinely test above 15 gpg.

Dissolved minerals are invisible in the water itself. The problem starts when the water is heated and evaporates. Calcium carbonate comes out of solution and bonds to whatever surface it was sitting on. In a dishwasher, the hottest surface is the heating element, so that is where scale grows fastest and thickest.

The arithmetic of deposits

A standard dishwasher cycle uses roughly 3 to 6 gallons of water. At 12 gpg, every gallon carries about 12 grains of dissolved mineral — around 0.78 grams. Run four gallons a day, every day, and the machine sees roughly 4,500 grains a year, close to 290 grams, or a bit over half a pound of mineral that has to go somewhere.

Not all of it deposits — much flushes out with the drain water — but the fraction that dries onto hot surfaces accumulates relentlessly. A 1mm scale layer on a heating element cuts its heat transfer efficiency measurably, which means longer cycles and higher electricity use to reach the same wash temperature.

Where the scale lands, in order

Scale does not distribute evenly. It concentrates in a predictable sequence, and knowing the sequence tells you how far along a machine is.

  • Heating element — first and heaviest. Look for a chalky white or grey crust on the coil at the base of the tub.
  • Spray arm jets — mineral narrows the holes from the inside, weakening the spray pattern before it blocks entirely.
  • The tub floor and the filter housing seat — a gritty white film that a fingernail scratches.
  • Pump housing and impeller — scale here creates the grinding noise people describe as the machine 'sounding tired'.
  • Glassware — permanent etching if silicate has been redepositing for years. This one cannot be reversed.

Scale versus etching: know which one you have

Cloudy glasses have two very different causes and the fix is opposite in each case. Mineral film sits on top of the glass — scratch it with a fingernail and it comes away, or soak the glass in white vinegar for fifteen minutes and the cloudiness clears. That is scale, and it is treatable.

Etching is the glass surface itself dissolving, caused by soft water plus too much detergent plus high heat. It does not scratch off, vinegar does nothing, and it is permanent. Households with softeners who overdose detergent see this a lot. If your glasses are etched, reduce detergent and lower the wash temperature rather than descaling harder.

Choosing a descaling interval for your water

The intervals we use when scheduling recurring service are based on measured hardness, not guesswork. If you do not know your number, your utility publishes an annual water quality report, or a test strip costs a few dollars.

  • Under 3 gpg (soft) — descale twice a year, watch for etching instead.
  • 3 to 7 gpg — descale every four months.
  • 7 to 10 gpg — descale quarterly.
  • 10 to 15 gpg — descale every eight weeks.
  • Above 15 gpg — descale every six weeks and consider a whole-home softener; the dishwasher is telling you what the water heater is also experiencing.

Rinse aid is not optional in hard water

Rinse aid is a surfactant that breaks water surface tension so the final rinse sheets off the dishes instead of beading. Beads dry into spots; sheets dry clean. In hard water this is the difference between acceptable and unacceptable results, and it also reduces how much mineral gets left inside the machine.

Keep the reservoir filled and set the dosage toward the higher end if you are above 10 gpg. Many machines also have a built-in water softener compartment that takes dishwasher salt — if yours does and it has been empty for years, filling it will noticeably improve results.

Will descaling fix cloudy glasses?
It fixes mineral film, which scratches off or clears with a vinegar soak. It cannot fix etching, which is permanent damage to the glass surface.
