Dishwasher Error Codes: The Categories Behind the Letters

Every brand uses different letters for the same five underlying faults. Knowing the category tells you whether it's fixable at home.
Short answer
Dishwasher error codes fall into five categories: fill faults, drain faults, heating faults, leak detection and control/communication faults. Drain and fill codes are often user-fixable; leak and control codes need a technician.
Read the category, not the code
Brands use incompatible code schemes — one manufacturer's drain fault is another's heater fault — so memorizing codes is pointless. What matters is which of five things the machine has detected, and your manual or the manufacturer's support page will map your specific code to one of them in seconds.
Fill faults
The machine expected water and did not get enough in the allotted time. Check the shutoff valve under the sink is fully open, the inlet hose is not kinked, and the inlet screen at the valve is not clogged with sediment. Low household water pressure and a partially closed valve after other plumbing work are common causes.
If the valve, hose and screen are fine, the inlet valve solenoid has likely failed — a parts repair.
Drain faults
The most common code family, and the most user-fixable. Work the standard drainage sequence: filter, disposal knockout plug, drain hose kink or missing high loop, air gap, then pump. Most drain codes clear once the physical blockage is removed.
A code that returns immediately after clearing the filter usually means the sump or hose is blocked further down.
Heating faults
The water did not reach target temperature in time. Heavy limescale on the heating element is a genuine cause — an insulated element heats slowly enough to trip the timeout — which is one of the few cases where descaling directly clears an error code.
If the element is clean and the code persists, the element or thermistor has failed.
Leak and control faults
Leak codes mean the base pan sensor detected water. Do not reset and keep running the machine — find the leak. This is the one code category where continuing to use the appliance can cause serious property damage.
Control and communication codes point at the electronic control board or wiring, often after moisture exposure. These are not user-serviceable and, on an older machine, frequently mark the end of its economic life.
Resetting, and when not to
Most machines reset by holding Start/Cancel for a few seconds or cutting power at the breaker for a minute. A reset is appropriate after you have fixed the underlying cause — it is not a fix in itself.
Never reset repeatedly to keep using a machine showing a leak code. And if a drain or heat code keeps coming back, the machine is telling you it has a maintenance problem that needs physical clearing, which is precisely what a deep clean addresses.

- Can I just reset the error and keep using it?
- Only after fixing the cause. Resetting through a leak code risks flooding, and repeat drain codes mean a blockage is still there.
- Can descaling clear an error code?
- Yes, for heating-timeout codes caused by a scaled element, and often for drain codes caused by a blocked filter or sump.
- Do error codes mean the machine is dying?
- Not usually. Fill and drain codes are typically maintenance issues. Control board and repeat leak codes are the serious ones.
